WOMEN EMPOWERMENT – EMPOWERING INDIA
We all are aware of the term ‘Women Empowerment’, which has become a fundamental matter across the nation. Enhancing the status, position and strength of women has become a major concern these days. Be it discrimination or inequality, women have constantly suffered politically, economically, physically and even mentally. However, a drastic change can be seen over decades during twentieth century including equal rights to women, benefiting women in every field, making their own decisions, improving their health and position. Empowering women in the present world is no more an unacceptable issue.
Are We Still There Or Changed?
There is a massive change if we distinguish since ancient India till today in the mentality of people. Women have faced illiteracy, deprivation, ignorance during 19th century whereas in the modern world, they’ve come forward to educate themselves, they’ve started raising their voice against ill practices and customs. Women were considered as unfit to live independent life in the ancient India, widows were denied any kind of comfort and luxury. Moreover, they were kept alone in a room, marriages of widows were not permitted. While, the condition during medieval period was more worst. Sati system, polygamy, infanticide, dowry, purdah system had taken place. It became entirely a male dominated society. However, after India gained independence, we have witnessed a rapid change in our society. Women took efforts themselves to build their confidence. Along with becoming aware of their rights, they also started avoiding stereotypical behavior of people.
Initiative Taken to Improve Situations.
Women are seen as the most capable human in all sort whether it comes to household chores or managing work outside four walls. They just need to take stand against those so called prathas or systems like dowry system, sati pratha (the practice among hindu communities where women were forced to burn on her husband’s funeral pyre), veil system (purdah) and child marriage after being suppressed for so long. Government initiated to help women to get better lives, better health facilities, better job opportunities so that they can become well to do and independent. Many schemes (yojana) are launched by central and state government. Some of the schemes are:
- Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme
- One Stop Center Scheme
- Women Helpline Scheme
- Ujjawala
- Swadhar Greh
- Working Women Hostel
- Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Scheme for the children of working mothers
- Support to Training and Employment Programme for women (STEP)
- Nari Shakti Puraskar
- Mahila Police Volunteers
- Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY)
Where on one side, women are determined to take efforts on their own, on the other hand, empowering women has become the top priority of government as well.
Dr. Vijay Laxmi, chairman-cum-MD of Women Development Corporation said, “the women helpline which was earlier functioning from India Bhawan will now shift to the newly opened center. The Women Helpline started in year 1999 with the help of UNICEF has been a success in the state. Every district of the state has its own women helpline number”.
“Seven more such centers will come up at Gaya, Begusarai, Nalanda, Gopalganj, Purnia and Darbanga soon”, she added.
CM Raghubar Das said, “2017-2018 will be observed as women empowerment year”.
Significant Changes in Women Stature
A huge change in growth of society is evident by endeavours of women and initiatives taken by government. Statistics show that 45.9% undergraduate students and 40.1% PhD students are women amongst the total enrolled students in India. It is estimated that an increment by 10 percentage points (68 million more women) in women’s labour force participation can raise India’s GDP to 16% by 2025.
They say, ‘there is no tool for development more effective than women empowerment’. True indeed!
